AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler Applauds Critical Protections for Mine Workers from Deadly Silica Exposure

    Brothers and Sisters,

Please see the press release below from AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler regarding the U.S. Department of Labor issuing the final rule to reduce silica dust exposure in our nation’s mines. This rule will provide better protection for Miners’ health from irreversible workplace illnesses. Elevator Constructors will be afforded these same protections from deadly silica dust exposure while performing work in mines. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su had the following comments:

“It is unconscionable that our nation’s miners have worked without adequate protection from silica dust despite it being a known health hazard for decades,” said Acting Secretary Julie Su. “Today, the Department of Labor has taken an important action to finally reduce miners’ exposure to toxic silica dust and protect them from suffering from preventable diseases. Mining communities across the country should know that the Biden-Harris administration is determined to do what must be done to ensure that miners come home safe and healthy at the end of every day.”

This rule is another step forward in our battle against silica in the workplace.

    Fraternally,

    IUEC Safety Committee

It is the mission of the IUEC Safety Committee to improve the Elevator Constructor’s sense of awareness to daily hazards present in the workplace
